New Orleans and Barataria

By the fall of 1809, Jean and Pierre were finally together and well established in New Orleans. While Pierre remained in town handling the business end of the operation, Jean organized a pirate base on Grand Terre and Grand Isle, two small islands at the entrance of Barataria Bay. That was an ideal location for a pirate base as it was on the Gulf of Mexico and accessible to New Orleans through several backwater routes. It was also a perfect place to conduct smuggling operations. Ships entering Barataria Bay could easily evade the customs inspectors whose inspection station at the port of Balize was located 30 miles to the east at the mouth of the Mississippi. Today, nothing remains of Balize as a hurricane destroyed the island in 1860.
